The Chiqlets Dance Team began in 2014 when students from Chiquy Mejia's Zumba classes were inspired to seek more dance opportunities. The group started performing at local events and chose the name "Chiqlets" in honor of Chiquy’s leadership. Since then, the Chiqlets Dance Team has become a community staple, performing regularly at community events like Morgan Hill Freedom Fest and National Night Out. The team's diverse members are united by a love of dance and exemplify the values of integrity, compassion, and acceptance.

The Chiqlets Dance Team is co-directed by Paula Scotney-Castle and Michelle Lieberman.
Together, Paula and Michelle bring a wide range of dance performance experiences. They are both Zumba Instructors and draw upon that experience to teach dance in a safe, fun way. They are driven by a love of community building and the ways that dance brings people together as an expression of joy.

Founder
Chiqlets Dance Team was founded by Chiquy Mejia. She directed the team until 2026, bringing her vision, enthusiasm, and professionalism to stages all over the Bay Area. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Chiquy has been performing and organizing events since 1988. Since 2003, she has served as Recreation Coordinator for the City of Morgan Hill, leading inclusive programs for children, teens, families and seniors.
